¶ IFR
ALL AIRCRAFT: Initial climb 5000. Tower must instruct aircraft to fly runway heading. On initial climb, approach will assign vectors to initial route fix.
¶ IFR Clearance
IFR (RNAV) Example:
Cleared to Miami International Airport via radar vectors to HUVOV then as filed. Maintain 5000, expect FL340 10 minutes after departure. Departure frequency Atlanta Approach 128.1, squawk 2001.

¶ VFR
Athens/Ben Epps Airport is surrounded by class D airspace. Aircraft entering class D airspace VFR require two-way communication with ATC and an operational transponder. 7400.2 Chapter 17, Section 2.
VFR Departure Example:
Southbound departure approved. Remain clear of the Atlanta Class Bravo. Maintain VFR at or below 2,000. Runway 27, taxi via A.
VFR Local Pattern Example:
Local traffic approved. Pattern altitude 2000’, expect left closed traffic runway 27, squawk VFR.

Ground is responsible for all taxiways. Aircraft do not need push and start or clearance to move on the ramp. Simply “advise when ready to taxi.”
¶ General Aviation and Jet Parking

All surfaces to the north of the field are available for GA parking.
¶ Runway Crossings
When requesting a runway crossing from TWR, specify the runway and the point at which crossing will occur, using the format of “Cross (rwy) at (intersection)?”. Callsign is not required.
TWR’s approval is only valid for one aircraft to cross as specified.

¶ Area of Responsibility
- TWR owns airspace from the surface up to and including 3,300 feet MSL, 4-mile radius.
- Tower owns the space between runways 09/27 and 02/20.

¶ Missed Approaches and Go-Arounds
Aircraft should be advised to climb to 1500 then climbing left turn to 2500 on heading 060 and handed off to the approach or center controller if available.
¶ Area of Responsibility
Athens Approach is responsible for departures and arrivals into KAHN.
- Arriving jet aircraft use 27/09. ILS is available only on runway 27, cross runway 20.
- Arriving GA aircraft use 27/09.
- Runway 02/20 is not preferred but may be requested and coordinated with the tower controller. RNAV is availabe on both runways.

Careful attention should be taken to avoid conflicts with arrivals and departures into KATL.
Runway assignments will be instructed on initial contact.
